UpcomingCampusEventsUSC, Monday, October 15; VKC room 100. ICUJP members planning to attend are Grace Dyrness, Rabbi Haim Beliak, Robert Link. From the USC info site: The Von KleinSmid Center Library is located on the northeast corner of campus near the intersection of Jefferson Boulevard and Figueroa Street (see directions to the campus).
Closest campus entrance to the VKC Library is Gate #3, (213)-740-3848, located at the intersection of West 35th Street and Figueroa Street, which is open 24 hours a day. Public parking is available for $7.00 Monday through Friday. A small amount of one-hour metered parking is also available. Parking availability may change due to special events, so it is helpful to call ahead. The library is located in the basement of the Von KleinSmid building (VKC). Use the NE corner stairwell (closest to Leavey Library) and follow the stairs down into the library.
October 16: Reporting back from USC meetingWe had quite a turnout at the USC meeting; Bonnie Blustein, Grace Dyrness, Rabbi Beliak, Robert Link, all from ICUJP, and Steve Gibson (although I think he may have been in his AFSC hat.) The students we met are grappling with an enormous task with insufficient participation, experience and time. Despite these limitations, there they were, working on nailing down a panel discussion for the day after Ann Coulter will be on USC campus. The students were quite gracious about letting us offer input, although I, for myself, can't say we had a dramatic impact on the proceedings. The students seemed, to my eye, overwhelmed and slightly discouraged. Who can blame them? I do not know what we can do to assist, we ourselves being off to such a late start. And this is just one campus; there are between four and eight campuses arguably within reach of ICUJP where we should have some kind of presence. We are not yet skilled ourselves at responding swiftly and effectively when opportunities like this arise, but I maintain hope that we can learn, and in the process help others learn. Scheduled Follow-up: I will email Gary Yeritsian, one of the organizers of the meeting, and invite him to keep us posted on his group's progress. I think Grace and Haim are considering attending the Coulter event, and I think the group we visited is planning on staging a walk-out. If so, we should try to participate in it, as many of us as can be there. And we should designate one of our own to bring a camera. That's all I have for now; feel free to add to the page to add what I've missed or refine what I may have botched. Sunday, October 14, 2 pm, there is a planning meeting at UCLA on the Kerckhoff Patio, which is right behind the Kerckhoff Coffee Shop in the Kerckhoff Building. (You'll have to go the UCLA website to get a map). The website says this is an area-wide planning meeting, not just for UCLA. Cal Poly - PomonaI have email out to Dr. Dennis Loo, who spoke at our Impeachment rally, asking for assistance in getting in front of student groups at his school this week.
